The Poky Little Puppy, was written by Janette Sebring Lowrey and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren. It was first published in 1942 as one of the first twelve books in the Little Golden Books series.

The story is about five little puppies who dug a hole under the fence so they can get out into the world and explore. When four of the puppies return home they were scolded by their mother for digging holes under the fence and sent to bed. The poky little puppy returned home late after everyone was asleep, avoids the scolding and discovers rice pudding that was what their mother had planned to share with all the puppies before she discovered the fence incident. After enjoying the rice pudding, the poky little puppy climbs into bed very happy.

The next day, again the puppies dug hole a hole under the fence, and again they set out to discover the world. Four of the puppies, once again, returned to an  angry mother, had no dessert and were sent to bed. Upon returning home, the poky little puppy discovers everyone asleep and chocolate custard. He enjoys his dessert before going to bed.

The following day, the four puppies returned home, but went back to the fence and filled in the holes when they think their mother is asleep. When she was saw what they were doing she praised them and gave them strawberry shortcake for dessert. When the poky little puppy came home, he discovered he had to squeeze past the boards because the holes had been filled in. When he saw that his siblings were just finishing up their dessert, his mother saw his disappointment, but reminded him that he missed out on strawberry shortcake because he was late and that he would have to go to bed without.

The next day there was a sign on the fence that read, "NO DESSERTS EVER...! ...UNLESS PUPPIES NEVER DIG HOLES UNDER THIS FENCE AGAIN!"
